I’ve wanted to paint a train for a while now, so when I saw this picture I knew I just had to paint it. 4464 Bittern is a London & North Eastern Railway Class A4 steam locomotive. Built for the LNER in 1937 at Doncaster Works as works number 1866, it was originally numbered 4464. Renumbered 19 on 16 August 1946 under the LNER 1946 renumbering scheme, it was renumbered 60019 by British Railways on 10 October 1948, after nationalisation. A Pacific 4-6-2 locomotive to the same design by Nigel Gresley as the more famous A4 Mallard and one of the 35 strong class, it is one of six to survive into preservation and is one of three currently certified for mainline use.
In preservation, the locomotive has also worn the identities of a number of its scrapped classmates, including the first of the A4 class 2509 Silver Link and most recently as 4492 Dominion of New Zealand.

This is ‘The Maestro At Work’ – A watercolour on Arches NOT paper. 140lb. 1/4 imperial. On a recent visit to Tavistock we spent a pleasant 45 mins listening to Al Marconi who is a brilliant classical guitarist. We purchased 3 CD’s from him because he is so good. A fellow Steve Hackett fan, he gave us a quick rendition of ‘Horizons’. Made us very happy. A great man to chat to. Painted from my own photo with kind permission from Al himself.

Watercolour on Arches NOT paper. 140lb. 1/2 imperial. Another one of Geoff’s tutorials. I had major problems with the paper on this one. It’s been on my stretcher board for some time and I had problems with the surface, particularly on the sky. I think the paper had picked up grease from my hands due to it being manhandled quite a lot. I may even have re-stretched it. I can’t remember now. I used a new app on my iPad for the drawing. It’s based on the camera lucida and it worked really well.

I’ve been at Bude heritage day today on the Bude Art Society stall. This is a demonstration painting for the benefit of onlookers, although most people were just browsing. I had a couple of people stop for a while and chat. It’s a shame the weather let us down as it kept numbers down. I was painting indoors though.
The Bude Art Society Summer exhibition is currently on and I’ve just received the good news that one of my pictures has sold. It was ‘Rainy Day In N.Y.C. This style of painting seems to to very well, so I need to do more like this 🙂

I haven’t done one of Geoff’s tutorials for a while now as I’ve been busy doing my own thing for exhibitions. I’m well behind on the available tutorials! This was painted on a new (to me) watercolour paper. Winsor and Newton. I must say I’m quite impressed with it and it’s a bit cheaper than Arches, my usual paper.

An iconic trawler that is berthed as a museum at The Alexandra Dock Grimsby. As Grimsby’s last traditional sidewinder ‘conventional trawler’, she represents a now virtually extinct breed of vessels that once made up the largest fishing fleet in the world. This is Lincoln Market Day a watercolour on Bockingford NOT 200lb paper. 1/2 imperial.
This, for me, was really an excercise in painting figures, as I don’t very often include figures in my work. I also did a fair bit of negative painting around the various shapes. It’s a LOT more detailed than some of my work, but I think the subject leant itself to this approach. I’ve kept the figures fairly loose though. Reference picture was Sandie Bell, from PMP.
I’ve just spent the last two days on a workshop with Jem Bowden at East Devon Arts. I had a great time and managed to complete this view of Sidmouth en Plein Air (outside). The second painting was completed this afternoon in my studio. Both were excercises in painting in an impressionistic style and focusing on skies. I think the first sky was more successful than the second, personally.
